The Duties of a Podiatrist

A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in foot care, specifically the lower leg, ankles and foot. They are responsible for diagnosing an injury through examination, x-rays or lab tests. Some ways of treating a foot injury include surgery or physical therapy. The types of problems a podiatrist will treat include bunions and calluses, warts, corns, athlete’s foot and blisters. Podiatrists can specialize in diabetic care, sports medicine and reconstructive surgery. For those interested in this profession, one must earn an undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university and go on to earn a doctorate at a school of podiatric medicine.
